I worked on this project while serving as a UX designer at the Center of Excellence in Social Technologies (NEES). The initiative was developed in collaboration with Brazil’s Ministry of Education (MEC) to support the digital operation of the National Textbook Program (PNLD).

About PNLD

The Brazilian Textbook Program (Programa Nacional do Livro e do Material Didático - PNLD) is a public policy implemented by the National Fund for Education Development (FNDE) and the Ministry of Education.

It provides public schools with textbooks and educational resources on a regular basis and free of charge, and is one of the largest book distribution programs in the world.

PNLD Digital Solutions

PNLD Digital Solutions brings together the systems and platforms used to operate, manage, monitor, and support the program’s technologies.

It connects FNDE, schools, education departments, publishers, public managers, and technical staff to help deliver printed and digital educational materials to students and education professionals across Brazil.

Within this digital ecosystem, I worked on the platform responsible for the evaluation of educational materials. My work focused on the complex, multi-stage workflow through which materials are reviewed and selected for Brazil’s National Textbook Program.

My Role

</aside>

As a UX designer, I worked closely with the design team to improve the platform’s accessibility, usability, and clarity for different user profiles.

The Challenge

</aside>

From a user experience and accessibility perspective, the challenge was to reduce friction within a highly regulated and rule-driven workflow.

Evaluators and technical staff needed to follow strict criteria, complete multiple steps, and navigate the platform without unnecessary barriers.

Confusing navigation, unclear instructions, inaccessible documents, or poorly communicated system feedback could increase cognitive load and disrupt the broader evaluation process.

My Contribution

</aside>

I conducted a systematic accessibility audit and usability evaluation across the platform’s key interfaces, reviewing its complex, multi-stage evaluation workflows through manual inspection and automated testing. The findings were documented and classified in a structured evaluation spreadsheet, mapped to the relevant WCAG 2.1 Success Criteria, and consolidated into technical reports with actionable recommendations aligned with accessibility standards and user-centred design principles. These deliverables helped the project team prioritize improvements and make the platform more accessible, usable, and intuitive for different user groups.
